Read synopsis: Goodreads

Rating: 3 stars

Sovereign Hope is a pretty nice and interesting read. While I did have some issues with the writing, primarily with the romance and sometimes a little on the heroine I can say that it had shown quite a number of potential to be a good series. Maybe just a little improvement here and there.

Farley was a character I couldn't identify with immediately. I wasn't sure what to really think of her character at first and it took me some times to get used to her. I don't know if she's tough or just really hardheaded. She did grow throughout the story though and I like that when awful and terrible things happened and even though she was extremely hurt, emotionally and physically, she wasn't the kind of character who moped around and succumbs to loneliness. She faced her problems, trained and made herself strong and useful.

Daniel was this gorgeous, hot and a bit of a jerk hero. He was secretive, arrogant and could be really harsh at times. He didn't quite appeal on me that much but when I learned of his story and his reasons behind that kind of facade I think I understand his character better.

Now for the romance, I had some issues here because most of the time it kinda feel a bit awkward for me. I didn't like the early assumptions of the other characters about the attraction between Farley and Daniel when there were so very little shown about that yet in the story. I also think there were more of tell than show. What they say about each other were a bit stated matter-of-factly so when Farley or Daniel started admitting to their selves that they are indeed attracted to one another it was a little hard for me to believe. Still, I wanted the two to be together and have a happy ending and I think the writing did improve towards the end.

The idea and concept of the Immortals were good but what I love the most here were the Whytes! They're creepy, deadly, sinister and gory. The way they were described was just enough to make the story a bit more thrilling and exciting. I just wished they played a bigger part in the story. lol!

Another thing, the ending felt like a bit cut short for me. But I guess it's okay, I don't really mind though. Overall, this was a pretty decent read. Although I wasn't overly thrilled and captivated by this book it still kept me entertained throughout the story. You might like this more than me especially if you're into paranormal books. :)

*A big thank you to Ms. Frankie Rose for providing me a copy of this book! :)

  1. Well, I'm definitely into paranormal books, so I'm willing to give this a shot. ;) It's a shame that the romance wasn't quite believable and more awkward than anything, and that the protagonist was hard to identify with. However, I'm glad there was character development. This is a great review, Eunice! :)

  2. I've seen this book around a few times but never knew what it was about. The premise sounds pretty good! It's good to hear Farley's character grew as the book progressed, even though she was difficult to get used to at first. Lovely review, Eunice! :)

  3. First time I've seen this book! It's so irritating when you can't understand a character but I'm glad Farley eventually grew on you and Daniel sounds like a very intriguing male lead ;) It's a shame their romance didn't really come through - I hate when the reader can't feel the chemistry or spark :(

    Fab review, Eunice <3

    1. Thanks Beverly! I did saw their chemistry ,really, but I just hate that some of the characters assume or declared that they indeed feel something with each other when I haven't even seen much development with their relationship yet. It tells a lot but show less, so it went a bit awkward and hard for me to accept their attractions when they admitted it. :D

  4. I'd seen this book around, but wasn't really sure of it, I understand why some parts didn't work out for you, but at least you enjoyed it for the most part. Lovely honest review Eunice :)

  5. Wow, this book has such a darkly stunning cover! I almost immediately thought vampires or zombies, but I'm actually glad that it's something cool and original like Immortals -- I love reading books with different idea in them! It's too bad that this wasn't blow-you-away amazing, but it still like it has a wonderful concept even though the romance felt a bit awkward. (I think I know what you mean LOL -- declarations of love before development? It's pretty common in YA!)

Thanks so much for the wonderful honest review, Eunice! :) Now that I'm warned, hopefully I'll like this a little bit more <3

  6. Glad you mostly enjoyed this story, Eunice. I'm not a fan of the tell instead of show in writing. It's sad that the romance didn't really work for you either. Hopefully the next in the series will improve. Great review! :)

  9. Hmm, interesting review, Eunice! Although I've never heard of this book before, I'm still glad you enjoyed this, in spite of the flaws. :) I agree, the romance can sometimes be a bit tricky to get right in novels, and I'm sorry it didn't work out for you in this book. Based on your review though, I don't think this book would be for me. :( Thank you for your honest opinion!
