Blog Tour: Touch of Death by Kelly Kashway (Review + Giveaway)

Title: Touch of Death (Touch of Death #1)
Author: Kelly Hashway
Expected Publication: January 15th 2013
Publisher: Spencer Hill Press
My rating: 3.5 stars
Jodi Marshall isn’t sure how she went from normal teenager to walking disaster. One minute she’s in her junior year of high school, spending time with her amazing boyfriend and her best friend. The next she’s being stalked by some guy no one seems to know.

After the stranger, Alex, reveals himself, Jodi learns he’s not a normal teenager and neither is she. With a kiss that kills and a touch that brings the dead back to life, Jodi discovers she’s part of a branch of necromancers born under the 13th sign of the zodiac, Ophiuchus. A branch of necromancers that are descendents of Medusa. A branch of necromancers with poisoned blood writhing in their veins.

Jodi’s deadly to the living and even more deadly to the deceased. She has to leave her old, normal life behind before she hurts the people she loves. As if that isn’t difficult enough, Jodi discovers she’s the chosen one who has to save the rest of her kind from perishing at the hands of Hades. If she can’t figure out how to control her power, history will repeat itself, and her race will become extinct.

Touch of Death was a fun and quick read. It was easy to get with the flow of the story and with the characters and understand what was really happening. It offered interesting points especially in mythology plus adding some twist about zombies. I actually sped through this! However, comes with its fast-paced writing was the feel that everything was happening in a rush. Thus also makings some part predictable and a little unconvincing.

The main character, Jodi Marshall, was a character that is easy to like. She played a very special and powerful character in the story however I couldn't seem to find some distinctive trait and quality in her that would have compelled me to really really like her and admire her character. Making her a little bland for my taste. Having said that she wasn't really a bad case of a main character. She has good qualities and principle but nothing really powerful or unique.

Alex, the love interest, started as a very intriguing character. I liked the bad boy and wicked side he'd shown in the beginning. I would have loved it even more if it hadn't been that toned down that much around the middle of the book when he and Jodi are finally learning and knowing each other. Still he's probable my most favorite character in this story.

I liked how Hashway combined the idea of Mythology and zombies. Adding to that, the mythological side wasn't really that conventional since it put one of the most known villains in the mythology on the good side. The only problem I had was that it felt rushed and quite predictable. I wouldn't have mind it being a little longer if it would make everything more credible and thrilling.

Overall, Touch of Death is a pretty entertaining and interesting read albeit a little lacking with some elements that might have made it even better. Still, I really did enjoy the overall. If you're looking for a fun, quick and unique paranormal read but doesn't have that too complex and mind-boggling world and plot, this is the right book for you.

Thank you Spencer Hill Press for providing me a copy of this book.

Review: Defy The Stars by Stephanie Parent

Title: Defy the Stars
Author: Stephanie Parent
Publication Date: July 30th 2012
Publisher: Stephanie Parent
My rating: 3.5 stars
Julia Cape: A dedicated classical piano student just trying to get through her last semester of high school while waiting to hear from music conservatories.

Reed MacAllister: A slacker more likely to be found by the stoners’ tree than in class.

Julia and Reed might have graduated high school without ever speaking to each other…until, during a class discussion of Romeo and Juliet, Julia scoffs at the play’s theme of love at first sight, and Reed responds by arguing that feelings don’t always have to make sense. Julia tries to shake off Reed’s comment and forget about this boy who hangs with the stoner crowd—and who happens to have breathtaking blue eyes—but fate seems to bring the two together again and again. After they share an impulsive, passionate kiss, neither one can deny the chemistry between them. Yet as Julia gets closer to Reed, she also finds herself drawn into his dark world of drugs and violence. Then a horrific tragedy forces Julia’s and Reed’s families even farther apart…and Julia must decide whether she’s willing to give up everything for love.

I was never a fan of Romeo and Juliet but when it was said that this book is some sort of a retelling of the said famous romance novel I was curious as how the author will pull it off. Well, actually it was more like I wanted to see a different ending, something that isn't really tragic or well, stupid because I really resent the ending of the original novel. Thankfully, I think the author did a very good job in portraying the story of Reed and Julia as the modern Romeo and Juliet and although the ending wasn't exactly what I had hoped for it was I guess, the best that could have come for a retelling of a tragic love story.

Julia and Reed comes from complete opposite world. The rich and the poor, the good and the bad, the responsible and the reckless. That isn't exactly a new setting to us but despite that it wasn't really hard to be swept and curious with the story of these two. Julia is a character that is easy to relate with and understand. Her emotions and feelings are very well voiced out making it even easier for us to understand her better. She did a lot of mistakes and wrong decisions but she's unmistakably a compassionate and strong person.

Reed is a character I'm very torn with. Not that he isn't likable but he was a character that I can't seem to have a firm grasp at. I saw the good in him, the vulnerable side, the reasons behind the addiction, his genuine intentions and I understand him, I really did and I did grew to care for him. Yet, despite all that it seems that he keeps on slipping away as the story goes on. It was sad and disheartening but I feel like the author purposely wrote his character that way.

The romance between the two was sweet and lovely. I love how the two met and how their feeling for each other developed, how they admitted it and how they fell into each other and didn't seem to care what people say about them. However, some part of me felt like it was lacking a bit of intensity, to completely convince the readers that they were indeed utterly, madly in love without words saying it. It might have made the ending even more compelling and powerful.

Nonetheless, Defy the Stars is lovely and heartwarming read although it ended still pretty tragic (not as much as the original Romeo and Juliet though) but the ending, for some reason I find encouraging. I was actually satisfied with it and it showed what should have been the right choice for the ending of a tragic love story.

Thank you YA Bound and Stephanie Parent for the review copy of this book.

Mini Reviews: Callum & Harper by Amelie Fisher, Going Under by Georgia Cates, On Dublin Street by Samantha Young

Title: Callum & Harper
Author: Amelie Fisher
Published: December 24th 2011
Publisher: Amelie Fisher
My rating: 3.5 stars

I really enjoyed this book especially Callum and Harper's journey in finding a new life together. It was actually very sweet and touching and fascinating to read. I followed eagerly the journey of these two and how they worked and found ways to live from scratch after being thrown by their foster family after turning their legal age. I was glad that even though they were complete stranger when they first met I was able to see the connection between the two right away and it didn't feel awkward at all. I was impressed by how they worked as  a team effectively; they were able to survive every day, found place to spend the night, foods to eat, money for their daily expenses and all. They'd faced a lot of obstacles but they get through all of it with the help of each other. They were even able to go to college! I love how the relationship between the two developed. It was sweet, cute and very heart warming. Although I admittedly sometimes it kinda irritates me how the two keep misunderstanding the actions of each other when really they both felt the same way. I understand that both were pretty scared to lose one another. Still I really enjoyed moments between the two. The only problem I had with this book though was the drama on the last thirds. It felt like it just dragged the story too long. I wouldn't have minded it if it wasn't really that long though. Nonetheless, I think this could definitely pass up as one of my favorite and sweetest contemporary I've read. I recommend this.

Published: March 10th 2012

My rating: 3 stars

This reminded me so much of Perfect Chemistry and Pushing the Limits although this one is published first before the latter. Actually it was pretty identical but for someone who's just looking for some sweet story with enough depth to read I think this could definitely work out for them. It wasn't that bad but since it was like I've read this story before it didn't really strike me anything. Sure, there were moments that I actually enjoyed, I just wished that it had offered something much more different and remembering. Some reactions from the other characters kinda put me off like the heroine's mom when she finds out who her daughter was dating. Of all people, she should understand them given her profession. It was kinda infuriating actually and a what-the-f* moment. The ending kinda weird-ed me out too. It was suddenly cut dead end, and in a worst scenario and then it was suddenly epilogue and it was happily ever after. I wish the author had explored the last parts some more. Nonetheless, despite the negative I've said it wasn't really that of a bad read. It was a fairly good and entertaining read.

My rating: 4 stars

I was surprised by how much I actually liked this story. It was my first book of Samantha Young and I didn't even know that she'd published a number of young-adult books before this and this is actually her first contemporary adult book. After reading this, I can say that Young is a talented writer and she sure knows what she was writing. The emotional depth and profundity of this book is very well showed and it successfully reached into me. I love how effectively she portrayed Jocelyn, the main character, that despite her flaws, mistakes and faults she was a character we understand. I love that she takes action; she knows she needed to see a therapist and she did it; she talk and thought of the things told on her and consider them. Although she gets to be stubborn and yes, definitely frustrating I can see how real and honest her character was written. The romance was definitely a winner for me. Branden is the kind of guy you'd totally love to be with. He was very persistent (in a cute and very sweet way), understanding and patient. I love how he never gave up on Jocelyn despite her streaks. This is not just some steamy romance novel because this book definitely has a lot more of depth that I had expected; it talks about friendship, acceptance, and forgiveness, overcoming fear and moving forward. This is a very worthy read. I totally love to recommend this.

Review: The Truth About Faking by Leigh Talbert Moore

Title: The Truth About Faking
Author: Leigh Talbert Moore
Publication: Spetember 1st 2012
Publisher: Smash
My rating: 3.5 stars
Jason just wants a date with Harley. Harley just wants a date with Trent. Trent's still getting over Stephanie.

When Harley and Jason decide to fake date, they uncover a school of deceptions. Trent's got a secret, but so does Jason. And the more time Harley spends secretly kissing her fake boyfriend, the further she gets from her dreams with Trent.

Worst of all, Harley's mom is getting cozy with her hot massage therapy student, and even Harley's Reverend Dad can't fake not being bothered by it. But when the masks finally come off, can everyone handle the real truth?

The Truth About Faking is one sweet and cute read. I have always love the idea of two people faking a relationship but would eventually developed feelings for each other. Reading Harley and Jason's story was a fun and enjoyable experience.

Harley had a crush on Trent for quite a long time so when Trent's girlfriend broke off with him Harley made plans on how to win Trent over and be his boyfriend. However some of her plans went flying out of the window when the new student, Jason, came. Harley asked Jason to help her get Trent to notice her by fake-dating. When the two started spending more time together they became closer and noticed more things about each other. But Harley felt complicated about it and her feelings for Trent, to top it off some issues were arising between her family and their community.

Harley is a character that is fun to read about albeit a bit awkward and frustrating sometimes. Still she's a character that is easy to like. She did mistakes and wrong choices but that only made her character more realistic. What's more good was that she learned from it and her character did progress throughout the story. Jason. He's my favorite character in this book. He was never dull and I really liked his sense of humor. Plus he was really sweet towards Harley and had always been there with her even if she was quite hard-headed.

Harley's dad was a pastor so there were some religious aspects in this book. Although some parts felt a bit preachy it wasn't really that much to make me or some readers uncomfortable about it. I actually liked some of the messages this book had offered. And I think the issues were handled very well.

Overall, this was an entertaining and enjoyable read. The characters are great and fun, the plot was wonderful and sweet and the messages were lesson-filled and insightful. I recommend this.

Thank you Leigh Talbert Moore for the review copy of this book.

Review: Cursed by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Title: Cursed
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Publication: September 18th 2012
Publisher: Spencer Hill Press
My Rating: 3.5 stars
Dying sucks-- and high school senior Ember McWilliams knows firsthand. After a fatal car accident, her gifted little sister brought her back. Now anything Ember touches dies. And that, well, really blows.

Ember operates on a no-touch policy with all living things--including boys. When Hayden Cromwell shows up, quoting Oscar Wilde and claiming her curse is a gift, she thinks he's a crazed cutie. But when he tells her he can help control it, she's more than interested. There's just one catch: Ember has to trust Hayden's adopted father, a man she's sure has sinister reasons for collecting children whose abilities even weird her out.

However, she's willing to do anything to hold her sister's hand again. And hell, she'd also like to be able to kiss Hayden. Who wouldn't? But when Ember learns the accident that turned her into a freak may not have been an accident at all, she's not sure who to trust. Someone wanted her dead, and the closer she gets to the truth, the closer she is to losing not only her heart, but her life. For real this time.

Hi guys! So I manage to write a review before I go MIA for a few days! Yaaay! Haha! I'll be leaving tomorrow and I don't know if I be able to get on line in the next few days but I'll be back next week so yeah, I'll be sure to visit your blogs by then and see what I missed and comment more. For the mean time here's my review for Jennifer Armentrout's Cursed. Check it out. :)

----------------------------------------

Cursed is a fantastic novel that even though has a pretty common trope - the touch of death - was still able to offer something that is quite different and fresh. And although I did find it not as striking as Armentrout's first two published novels it was still a fairly entertaining read with outstanding characters and fantastic twists.

Embers suffered a lot since the accident that caused his father to die and her to have the ability of touch of death. Her mother had gone into depression after that thus leaving her alone to take care of her younger sister, Olivia. Ember is a character that is easy to sympathize with especially with how things turned out for her after the accident - inside and outside of her home. Yet she became a determined and strong-minded character especially when it comes to Olivia. I like how much she cared for her and loved her. But it was also saddening and yes, quite frustrating with how strongly she believed that her ability is a curse - that she is cursed.

In all honesty, I was actually really frustrated with her especially with the trust issue she had with Cromwell's group and how long it took her to realized that she'd been wallowing herself for so long and that it was finally time for her to take action and help herself with her ability. Although I think it was already a little late for me to make me like her as much as I did with Katy and Alex, I do still think that she is a person that has a lot of admirable and desirable characteristics.

As for the Hayden Cromwell, Ember's love interest and also someone with ability, he is a character that is so easy to like. He is a total sweet heart and although could be described soft if compared to Armentrout's other boys he has this edges in him that makes him definitely crush-able and swoon-worthy. And yes, hot too! His patience and hard work in helping Ember control her gift is admirable and I like how much he loved his adopted family.

Overall, this is definitely an entertaining and fantastic read albeit a bit predictable and in my case, quite frustrating. But I can still say that Armentrout's writing is indeed really good because even with those issues I had I can't seem to put this down when I started reading it. This may pale compared to her Obsidian and Half-blood this book is still a very worthy read. And yes, I guess I treasure this because this is my first ever physical ARC! Haha! I recommend this.

Thank you so much Spencer Hill Press for sending me an ARC of this book! You guys rock!

Inbetween Blog Tour: Review + Guest Post + Giveaway

Hi guys! Today is my stop for Tara Fuller's Inbetween Blog Tour. I'll be sharing a book review, a guest post about the behind the scenes of Inbetween and a giveaway!

Title: Inbetween (Kissed by Death #1)
Author: Tara Fuller
Publication Date: August 28th 2012
Publisher: Entangled Teen

Since the car crash that took her father’s life three years ago, Emma’s life has been a freaky — and unending — lesson in caution. Surviving “accidents” has taken priority over being a normal seventeen-year-old, so Emma spends her days taking pictures of life instead of living it. Falling in love with a boy was never part of the plan. Falling for a reaper who makes her chest ache and her head spin? Not an option.

It’s not easy being dead, especially for a reaper in love with a girl fate has put on his list not once, but twice. Finn’s fellow reapers give him hell about spending time with Emma, but Finn couldn’t let her die before, and he’s not about to let her die now. He will protect the girl he loves from the evil he accidentally unleashed, even if it means sacrificing the only thing he has left…his soul.

Review:

I'm not usually into reaper boy-human girl story. I remember reading some but not many. I don’t really have problem with them but I wasn’t really that inclined to pick them up. Still, when I saw the blurb of Inbetween there something about it that had me hooked. I was intrigued and interested and very curious to find out the story of Finn and Emma. So I was really glad when I was able to join a blog tour for this book and got a review copy of it.

The plot line of this book kinda reminded me of some angel books like Fallen and Daughter of Smoke and Bone. The girl being reincarnated as a human who doesn't remember anything from her past life and the guy who knows and remembers everything but torn and guilty from moving back to the girl's new life. Although it wasn't very original I think it still delivered some quite unique stuffs that I find enjoyable and amusing.

Finn was an endearing and interesting character. His guilt and sadness about the things that he did in the past and his love for Emma was so heartbreaking and touching that I wanted to comfort him and hug him. Emma although likable I did find a bit dull. I would love for her to developed more personality, something that would make her character more striking.

The story of Finn and Emma was a very sweet and heartbreaking one. I was curious and intrigued as to why Finn can't go near and reveal himself to Emma and why he feels guilty and responsible for her. I wanted to learn what had really happened in the past. And when I finally learned it I was sad and sympathetic for the two.

However, I think I wasn't completely that invested in their love story. There were moments that I get so fond of it then moments that I just don't quite care. In a story, I love seeing two characters fall in love, how it developed and grew. But in this book, having that part happened in the past, I wasn't able to see more of it. The author did provide flash backs that showed how the two met, moments between them and how the conflict came but I think it wasn't really that enough for me to completely connect and invest in their romance.

The secondary characters were my favorite! Especially Cash (!!!), Anaya, Easton and even Scout. I love that they did make an impression in me and didn't just fade into the background.

Despite all the slight issues I was still satisfied and happy with how things turned out. The ending, I think, was a bit too nice. But it was a happy ending so I guess I should be happy about it. lol! The overall I enjoyed and I do still think that this is a nice and decent read, although not mind blowing but absolutely lovely.

Inbetween: Behind The Scenes

Behind every writer and every book, there is a process. For me that process relies heavily on inspiration. I am inspired by books, movies, music, documentaries, and so much more. So, I’ve decided to share some of the things that inspired the book INBETWEEN.
  1. Music is a huge inspiration for me when it comes to writing. From lyrics that fit what my character is feeling to a beat or melody that sets the mood for a scene. Each of my books have a playlist. One of the songs from the INBETWEEN playlist that really inspired Finn was Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. From the lyrics to the beat, this song was perfect in every way for him.
  2. The initial idea for Inbetween actually came from an Edgar Allen Poe quote. When I read this I knew I wanted to write a story where death was keeping two lovers apart. Literally.

“The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins?”  ~ Edgar Allen Poe

  3. Another big inspiration for this book came from a documentary I saw about a little boy who had the reincarnated soul of a World War Two Pilot. That was the story that not only got me very interested in reincarnation for this book but it is also inspired Finn in a lot of ways.

  4. Fantasy Cast! I love working with images of actors or models for my characters. Here are the people that inspired Finn, Cash, and Emma.

Ashley Benson as Emma
Adam Gregory as Cash

Review: The Treachery of Beautiful Things by Ruth Frances Long

Title: The Treachery of Beautiful Things
Author: Ruth Frances Long
Release Date: August 16th 2012
Publisher: Dial Books
Rating: 3.75 stars

A darkly compelling mix of romance, fairy tale, and suspense from a new voice in teen fiction

The trees swallowed her brother whole, and Jenny was there to see it. Now seventeen, she revisits the woods where Tom was taken, resolving to say good-bye at last. Instead, she's lured into the trees, where she finds strange and dangerous creatures who seem to consider her the threat. Among them is Jack, mercurial and magnetic, with secrets of his own. Determined to find her brother, with or without Jack's help, Jenny struggles to navigate a faerie world where stunning beauty masks some of the most treacherous evils, and she's faced with a choice between salvation or sacrifice--and not just her own. (taken from Goodreads)

Those who know me know that faerie-themed books don't usually work for me. I think the only fae series I finished and really liked was the Iron Fey by Julie Kagawa. Maybe because I started with a very good one that I tend to base my expectation on it. Fortunately, The Treachery of Beautiful Things did work for me. Although not as mind blowing as I would have hoped for but still it was a nice and decent read with an engaging plot and characters. I was actually surprised that I ended up liking and enjoying it.

It didn't start well with me though. I can't seem to get into it during the first parts that I kept on putting it down after a few chapters only to picked it up again because I feel bad about it. The fourth time I picked it up I decided I'll finish it then. And I'm glad I did because as the story progressed it started getting really interesting and I soon find myself pretty invested with the story and its characters.

Jenny was a character I didn't exactly think would be tough and strong-willed. She appears to be bit too "damsel in distress" especially during the earlier parts. But I'm glad that over the course of the story her character developed and I saw that she could be a independent and strong character too despite being naive sometimes.

Jack surprises me quite a lot in here too. Clearly, I had the wrong first impressions in most of the things here. I thought Jack would be this too good boring hero who would do anything to save the day. Something that easy and predictable. But I was surprised to find a multi-layered and complex character in him. I love the mysterious side in him and I enjoyed figuring it out.

There were holes in this book that prevented me from giving it a higher rating. Things that I think were left unexplained or should've been discussed more. Thus making some parts of it a bit confusing and disorienting. Nonetheless, the last parts, I think, was actually pretty good and even touching. The ending was cute, sweet and satisfying although I wish it was explored a little more since I felt like it was dropped a bit too convinient.

Overall, the plot line was intriguing and engaging and the characters were likable. Just a little bit more explaining in some parts becuase there were moments that I did feel lost. Despite its flaws I think this is a nice and lovely read. It took me a while to get into it but as soon as it started getting really interesting I kept wanting to know what's gonna happen next. I recommend this.

Review: While It Lasts (Sea Breeze #3) by Abbi Glines

Title: While It Lasts (Sea Breeze #3)
Author: Abbi Glines
Published: July 31st 2012
Publisher: Abbi Glines
Read synopsis: Goodreads

Rating: 3.5 stars

When I first met Cage in Because of Low he wasn't something that was really likable. Most of the time I was just kinda disgusted and annoyed with him. He was a total man-whore and I didn't really find any reason to like him until the end of the book when I saw how much he loved Low and how honest and accepting he had been. And so I thought maybe there's still hope for this guy to change, I would love to see a story for him.

And I finally did! I enjoyed it but well, I did have some issues with it. Maybe because I had read so much of Abbi Glines that I can almost predict how things would turn out or end up. Or how his/her characters would react. I was kind of wishing a little something new from her but this one felt the same like all of her other books, plus I thought some parts were left a little unexplained. But overall it was a very easy, fast, fun and sexy read that made me still enjoy most of it. :)

Cage had a tremendous transformation here which was a very fascinating thing to see. Especially with the way he started acting and thinking after meeting Eva was so unlikely to the Cage we first met in Because of Low.  It was very interesting to see the indifferent and arrogant Cage turn into a sweet, caring and faithful guy. However, I think the transformation in him felt so sudden. Of course, I like that he was changing but I didn't see any reason or thing so powerful that might have compelled him to change his ways so suddenly. I understand that he got attracted to Eva like nothing before but I think the change would have been more believable if he had a deeper struggle and confusion in assessing his feelings, I was actually expecting him to fight it especially after seeing how he was in Because of Low.

Eva. She had a very heartbreaking past that had greatly affected her. She closed herself off to a lot of things and refused to move on. So when she and Cage met well, she was all fierce and harsh. And I like it, I like her ferocity and how she treated him sternly. She seems to be a very challenging character so I thought it would be really fun. However it was just short-lived. Not that she trusted Cage right away but she’d gone soft on him a little too fast. And just like my issue with Cage, her change of heart felt too sudden. I was expecting more resistance and reluctance from her. Like I said I thought this would be fun because I thought Eva would be a great challenge for Cage. I was hoping for the both of them to fight a lot and have funny banters even if their attraction was growing.

Nevertheless, the good that all came from the too fast and sudden changes and transformation in the characters was that it made this book an easy read with less frustrating dramas. Plus, we all get to the sexy parts right away which Abbi Glines is so good at. LOL! The writing was actually smooth and easy but I think the story would have been better if there were more depth especially with how the two dealt their feelings. I just felt like it came too fast and easy. But despite that, I think I enjoyed the overall.

If you want an easy, fun, fast but sexy and hot read, I guess this one is for you.

Review: Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris

Title: Unraveling
Author: Elizabeth Norris
Published: April 24th 2012
Publisher: Balzar + Bray
Read synopsis: Goodreads

Rating: 3.5 stars

Okay. I'm probably leaning a bit on the minority side. Not that I didn't like the book it was just that, with all those glowing reviews I kind of expected this book to blow my mind. Which I realized was not a very good move. Because it did not. Although there were parts that I did enjoy and had me quite impressed I was a bit sad that I wasn't completely captivated by the story.

With all the FBI investigations, bio-terrorism and pseudoscience talks, dead bodies from radiation and parallel universe this book had so much remind me of the TV series, Fringe. This made me more excited because I love that series yet it also lessen my surprise when twists and revelations came. There were revelations that still managed to surprise me a little and had me curious but the overall feel was actually just fine and still kept me pretty entertained.

Janelle was an impressive and remarkable character. She was smart, tough, brave and independent. Even though I can say that I was impressed by her curiosity and braveness to conduct her own investigation sometimes I feel like it was getting borderline nosy. Or maybe it's just me because without her being too curious I guess the story wouldn't be really interesting and engaging.

There were still things that I really like about her like the way she took responsibility in their family and her relationship with his brother, father and Alex. There were a lot of things thrown to her but she took and faced it bravely and for that I respect her character.

I like Ben and I find him really intriguing although sometimes I find him a bit awkward too. He's character was the kind that was so easy to like because he was good, caring and all and I do really like him but for some reason it was not in a swooning and gushing way. I could still say though that his chemistry with Janelle was really good and well, they could actually make some pretty hot scenes too.

I had some conflicting emotions with the romance. Not that I hate it but for the most part I was a just a bit unconcerned about it then suddenly I would grew a little fond of it. I struggled a bit to keep my connection from it. And sometimes I don't know what I should really feel for them if I should be happy or sad or whatever.

The ending was the one I really loved and it was really beautiful. It was sad and sweet at the same time. If I were Janelle at that time I might have drowned myself into depression but I was impressed that despite all those things that happened Janelle tried to see the good things and took that chance she was given to live again.
"But I'm alive.
I'm alive.
More alive than I was before any of this happened.
Life is a fragile thing. Apparanly the whole world is fragile too.
But it'll beat on.
Because it has to."
Although the story wasn't really utterly original I still find some of the ideas and concepts really cool and very entertaining. And to tell you the truth I actually loved it too, if it hadn't just came a bit predictable for me and a little exhausting I would have really loved the story more. This book definitely has a lot of potential and even though it didn't blow my mind it was still a really good and entertaining read. I would still love to recommend this to you.

Review: What I Didn't Say by Kaery Taylor

Title: What I Didn't Say
Author: Kaery Taylor
Publication Date: May 11th 2012
Publsiher: Kaery Taylor
Read synopsis: Goodreads

Rating: 3.5 stars

After reading the blurb I thought it was a heavy read. Because, you see, it involves some devastating and depressing incidents. But surprisingly it was not, in fact it was actually a pretty light read but with great in depth lessons. I was touched and moved by this story and although I think I get a bit teary-eyed on some parts it wasn't really a depressing story.

Jake's story was heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. And I couldn't help but be impressed by this boy and by the way he faced and accepted his situation. Jake didn't let himself be overcome by self-pity even when I know it was hurting him really bad. I was waiting for him to breakdown and cry and get angry over his loss but he never did and I was really touched by it I think I teared up a little.

Sam was a really strong character. I didn't like her right away and how she reacted on some stuffs on the earlier parts but when I learned her story I finally like and understand her. Through her Jake was able to realized that he has a lot to be happy about despite not being able to speak. I really love how Jake and Sam were able to find and save each other.

The love story was sweet and very touching. I did find some bits of it a little corny and some dramas had me saying 'ohkaaaay' but sill the message and lessons the author wanted the reader to see was very well conveyed. It was beautiful and poignant. There are so many things in this world we should be grateful about and shouldn't be taken for granted, that there are a lot worse out there that we couldn't even imagine but we have to see the good things we have even the simplest things.

Overall, this was a very heartwarming and touching book that teaches great and wonderful lessons. I really enjoyed it and I love to recommend this to you guys! :))

Thank you Kaery Taylor and Netgalley for providing a review copy!

Review: The Probability of Miracles by Wendy Wunder

Title: The Probability of Miracles
Author: Wendy Wunder
Publication Date: December 8th 2011
Publisher: Razorbill
Read synopsis: Goodreads

Rating: 3.5 stars

Won't there be any cancer book out there that will not make me cry in the end? Or at least make the main character survive and live? Why do they always have to die?!

If it wasn't for the last third of this book, which was really beautiful and heartwarming, I might have really given this a 2 or 2.5 stars. Cam's too cynic attitude really didn't help me to like her and her story right away. Instead of being sympathetic of her I was a bit annoyed and frustrated. I understand her situation and what she'd been enduring for so many years and yes, it was awful and I was sorry and sad with all of that but this girl was just so so negative. Usually, I would have loved a heroine who's sarcastic, smart-mouthed and tough. I would have admired her attitude and how she handles and put up on things but in Cam's case I was like hopeless. She doesn't believed in miracles, well, I'm okay with that but what was really depressing was that she doesn't let any positive thing to come in her short remaining life. I was so tempted a lot of times to drop this book unfinished. I was so hopeless of her, and I was like this girl should have met Augustus Waters! I even told myself that I won't cry if she died in the end. But I ate back all those words. Because I did. A lot.

So I'll be straight here, I didn't like the first and second thirds of the book. I was frustrated, annoyed and hopeless. But the last thirds? I LOVED it. It was beautiful, poignant and very moving. It made me forget all my frustrations on the earlier parts and I finally found myself loving Cam and the wonderful person inside her. It was touching to see her letting things through, even if she doesn't believe in miracles she started believing that great things could still happen without needing an explanation. I love how she finally opened up and find happiness and true love before it's too late. All those things that happened in this part were really moving and I appreciated every second of it. The romance is definitely a thumbs-up, it was sweet, swooning, and definitely heartwarming. And all the characters were really wonderful, they all have been a very good part of the story making it more inspiring and enriching.

The ending was so beautiful it hurts. I was so moved and touched that fat tears started coming out of my eyes. It was heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. And yes, I loved it. Even if it left me like a mess. I was satisfied and I was glad I didn't give up on this book and continued reading it. I just wished that Cam's change of heart started a bit earlier since I really struggled during the first two-thirds of the book. But all in all, this is a very heartwarming and inspiring story and I did enjoy it. I would still love to recommend this.

Review: That Wedding (That Boy #2) by Jillian Dodd

Title: That Wedding
Author: Jillian Dodd
Published: February 10th 2012
Read synopsis: Goodreads

Rating: 3.5 stars

First of all I'd like to say that I really enjoyed this book, not as much as the first one though, but still I had fun reading this. However there were parts that just made me quite annoyed and frustrated and I think I just can't really overlook them this time - but maybe that could just be me. Ha! The book still did a very good job on showing the important aspects - especially marriage and what goes with it, struggles and conflicts couples face and overcoming past heartbreaks (Jaydyn's parents' death).

I swoon a lot of times to Jadyn and Philip's relationship. It was cute, funny, and really sweet. Although I do think it was a bit unhealthy during the first parts but it definitely matured as the story went by. I understand Jadyn's struggles and confusion as she prepared for the wedding. But sometimes she pretty gets on my nerve. Haha! Her thoughts were pretty shallow most of the time and that just annoyed and frustrated me, especially during their counseling. But that doesn't mean I hate her. I, on the most part, feel sorry for her, I thought that if her parents were there she wouldn't be acting like that, she would have understand and face it better. But there was this one part that almost put me on edge! I almost pulled out my hair. And some of her past escapades kinda shocked me. But still, all went well. I was relieved, happy and touched when she finally realized what was wrong - how she thought that she handled her parents death well but in fact she did it terribly - and learned her lesson and what she has to do.

Jadyn, Philip and Danny's friendship was still very much highlighted in this story. And it was still really great and wonderful and I just loved how it was. And I found myself jealous of Jadyn again for having such wonderful and loyal boys in her life.

I also loved a lot of scenes in this book that made laughed so much! One was the "huge spider" scene! That was epic! It was just so funny and hilarious! Then the bachelors party, ah, I was grinning the entire time reading that part. And of course the wedding, it was wonderful and amazing though I think it was too extravagant, too perfect, but why not? Right? Favorite part of the wedding? When Danny and the boys danced! Haha! I can so much imagine them dancing the dougie, it would just looked so hot! lol!

And yeah, I really enjoyed how thorough Jillian Dodd showed the wedding planning here. In fact while reading this I started to plan my own wedding too! Wahahaha! I actually felt excited even though I know it would happen years from now. I didn't actually thought of that but after reading this it just kinda feel nice to think about it.

Overall, this was still a very good read! Funny, sweet and steamy with a very wonderful ending. I was thrilled when I learned there would be a third book, That Baby! Yay! I would definitely be looking forward to it! :))

Review: Two-Way Street by Lauren Barnholdt

Title: Two-Way Street
Author: Lauren Barnholdt
Published: June 26th 2007
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Read synopsis: Goodreads

Rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

I was a bit reluctant to read this the first time I saw the blurb. I thought it would be a worrying and frustrating story. And well, it did turn out to be...a little frustrating. Not that I hate it, because really, I liked it. There were just some times where I wanted to smack both of Courtney and Jordan's head and tell them to please stop all the drama and just talk and tell the freaking truth. And then there goes the ending that kinda fell short on me. Nonetheless, most parts of the book was really enjoyable and I loved them. :))

The story was narrated in both character's perspective. Which was great because understanding and connecting with them would be easier. Courtney's character was real and tough. But sometimes she could be really stubborn and annoying. Though it was understandable since she was dealing with a broken heart and spending 3 days alone with the guy who hurt you pretty bad was tough. Jordan, on the other hand was a really sweet and caring guy. I understand him and his reasons why he did those things. I know he was confused and hurting too and that he was only trying to protect Courtney. But I wouldn't overlook that he did some poor and stupid decisions. Well, of course I do blame their crappy parents especially Courtney's jerk of a dad. But if he had been stronger and believed in Courtney they could have avoided major heartbreaks.

What I enjoyed and loved the most though was the flash backs on how Jordan and Courtney met and started their relationship. It was so cute, sweet and swoony. It was great to see how their relationship developed especially since they have zero interest with each other the first time they met, not the hate kind thing but just bland. Jordan's perspective was the one I really enjoyed 'cause from the guy who just do hook ups it was entertaining and amusing to see how he changed when he started really liking Courtney.

I was relieved when Courtney finally discovered the truth, however I didn't like how she reacted at that point. I mean, I understand she has the right to be angry but she was seeing black and white. I expected her to analyze everything that happened and understand that Jordan wasn't totally at fault with what happened and to see how hard it was for Jordan too. I wanted her to be more angry at her dad but it seemed like she was more angry at Jordan. Then there were a few more things that happened which I think was just dragging the story. The ending was good but I feel like it was too fast and abrupt. They made up easily so I was like what was those dramas for in the last parts if they could have fixed it so easily. Yeah, Courtney finally understood Jordan's reason but I felt like she didn't saw how much it hurt him too. I really wanted her to realize how hard it was for Jordan to be dealing with that 'secret' for four long months and that she wasn't the only one who needed comforting but also Jordan. I wasn't that satisfied but since they made up and was back together I guess I should be happy with that.

I would still want you guys to try this one. The ending was good and I think it was just me who wanted more. lol. And there were really great parts and scenes too that I think you guys would enjoy so I guess I still recommend this. :))

Review: The Boyfriend Thief by Shana Norris

Title: The Boyfriend Thief
Author: Shana Norris
Published: April 30th 2011
Publisher:
Read synopsis: Goodreads

Rating: 3-3.5 stars

When I first saw this I thought it would just be something sweet, light, fun read. Just something you read to feel good and swoon and grin. Well, it did make me swoon and grin but it actually discussed more deeper issues than what I had expected.

The main character, Avery, was miserable and broken. She's a control freak and wanted everything to be planned out. Since her mother had left them 4 years ago she developed that kind of attitude, thinking that if she didn't plan everything it will all just shatter and fall away, she was so obsessed with being organize. She always have this scientific explanation in everything and gets to be so judgmental most of the time. To be honest, I find her really frustrating. She's like the character you'd want to shake really hard or banged up her head just to make her eyes open.

Around half of the book I already wanted her friends to get angry just so she could be called out of her behavior.I was aggravated on how long it took her to realize how wrong she saw things and treated other people. But well, thank goodness around three-fourths of the book everything went pretty well - the part where she started totally understanding everything and admitting to herself and others her mistakes.

I almost gave this a lower rating than 3 but the ending changed my mind. And how can I not move it up without considering how brilliant a character Zac was! Zac was a unique character. His choice of career was something I hadn't encountered in any books I've read. He's the opposite of Avery, they're like the ADHD and the OCD. Totally the opposite but they fit, they balance each other. Not just Avery's issues were tackled in this book but also Zac's. It was great how this two learned things from each other and changed what was wrong in them. And even though I'd spent most of the time getting frustrated with Avery I did still love her and Zac. They were just so cute together, especially that part in the ending!

This was a story of acceptance, forgiveness, change and living life the way we should. This was really a fast read, I finished this in just a couple of hours and I can say it was fun especially Zac, witty and really insightful. ^^

Review: Touch by Jus Accardo

Title: Touch
Author: Jus Accardo
Published: November 1st 2011
Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Read synopsis: Goodreads
Rating: 3.5 strars

Touch was an easy and fast-paced read. The plot was fairly entertaining and engaging though it was a bit predictable. The characters were cool and good and the story offered enough exciting actions and twists. I had fun reading this however it didn't left much big impression on me and I'm not quite sure if I will continue reading the series.

I liked Denzee's character, her being straight-forward and sarcastic definitely make her a cool heroine. A lot of people find her hot and good looking and she's very well aware of that but still acted it really cool. Though at times her actions kind of get on my nerves. She could be a little dense and clueless at times.

I find Kale funny, cute and...awkward. His ignorance about the outside world was just really cute that I kept on grinning and laughing whenever he encounter things that amazed him and said things straight even when it should be kept a little private, and yes, it was a bit awkward too. I love how he learned things and grew to understand love. But when I reached the second half of the book I find his character a bit undeveloped. Yeah, I liked him because his actions were funny and very innocent but it was getting old and as the story progressed I can't find any other things that I would love about him.

Alex was an interesting character. I actually liked him before he did a really bad thing which was really a letdown. But still, I think he wasn't really that bad. Brandt, Dez's cousin is one of my favorite character, he's cool and really kind. And his ability was definitely awesome.

The first half of the book really did turn so well for me however during the second half I kind of feel like the story turned a little slow and not as exciting during the first part. The story was cool and I really did enjoy some parts of this book but I just didn't really got caught up big time.

Review: Desires of the Dead by Kimberly Derting

Desires of the Dead by Kimberly Derting
Rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

As much as I love the first book, this one just did't really got me totally hooked up. It was okay, it was a nice read but the excitement I got were a little less than what I had expected. I guess I was expecting something more twisting, something totally shocking. Nevertheless the writing was good, Derting was still able to deliver some really spooky and creepy parts very well.

I find Violet a little annoying here. I just don't get some of her reasons why she doesn't want to tell her family about what she had heard or discovered or why its taking her too long to at least tell it to Jay. She's getting a bit dramatic in this book. And Jay, really he's just so kind and too sweet and mushy and cheesy. Which is a bit... too sappy for a mysterious book, I guess. I don't know, sometimes I find it really cute, but sometimes its 'okay, enough'.

New characters were also introduced. Sara and Rafe. Sara's knowledge about things like what Violet can do was intriguing. And Rafe was interesting. And I like him. LOL. He doesn't have that much appearance on the book but really, you'll definitely notice him when he appears. I even thought that it was okay if he became a competitor to Violet's attention. I wasn't really at all bothered if it ever comes to like that. I mean I like Jay and Violet, but I think I might also like Rafe and Violet. Well, let’s see on the next book. ^^

The mysterious parts, the guessing-game was exciting and interesting however when everything was finally revealed it wasn't all that surprising. But I liked that in the end Violet finally realized that her ability is a gift and not a curse, something that she could use to help others and for the good. :))

So yeah, 3.5 stars for this book. I think I'm still gonna read the 3rd book. Because of Rafe! LOL. :)))

Review: Eve by Anna Carey

Eve by Anna Carey
Rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

After a plague that eat up most of the population of America girl orphans were brought to an exclusive school were they got educated and taken care of supposedly to make them ready for the trade in the City of Sand after they graduate. On the night before her graduation Eve discovered something about the school; what her school's purpose really is, what the students are for, and what will they be once they graduated. She then escaped her school and wander through the wilds to find Califia, the only place were she could be safe.

Eve was a nice character but not very much the exciting and fun one. She gets annoying at times and also naive, but with the way she was raised its kind of understandable. I like how she grew throughout the story, how she learned and realize things. Caleb is a really likable character. He's nice, genuine, and mature. He's smart and it nice to see how he cared for Eve. Though I kind of think that the developing feelings between Eve and Caleb was a bit rush.

Eve is an easy, light read especially for a dystopian novel. In this time of the world, girl orphans are taught to hate men, that they are dangerous, perilous and known to only take advantages to the opposite sex. When Eve escaped she met Caleb and a lot more of them and learned that what was taught to them were mostly untrue. The concept was a bit appalling but also interesting, the idea of girl being use just to sire babies, lots of babies was a bit disgusting but also made me curious. I was excited once Eve discovered it because, well, there goes the action and adventure. And also with the King wanting Eve to be the sire of his heir it became more stirring and thrilling. However sometimes there are parts of the book that are a bit dull. And there were less action that what I would have expected.

Nevertheless it was a good and enjoyable read. I can see potential from this book. And lets see if the second book can pull it off. :DD
